Just like beer, wine and cheese, chocolate fits right in the fermented foods category. Ever imagine pairing your favorite chocolates with your favorite cheeses? We’ve paired up with Josh and Kristin of Terroir Chocolate, our local chocolatiers, for a tasting session you won’t want to miss.
The tasting will include a sampling of 4 cheeses, 8 chocolates and a glass of our favorite locally made wine. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available.
This could be the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for that special someone!

DEAR COUNTY AGENT GUY
Calf Pulling, Husband Training, and Other Curious Dispatches from a Midwestern Dairy Farmer
BY Jerry Nelson
“Jerry Nelson’s column comes from the true heart of the Midwest. He has the true voice, the slow twang. He knows wheat from barley. He knows hardware, he knows vegetation, he knows people.”—Garrison Keillor
In the tradition of Mark Twain and Jean Shepherd, Dave Barry and Garrison Keillor, Jerry Nelson is a humorist whose beat is the American heartland, a small-town world of pickup trucks and Sunday night pancake dinners, dropping in on neighbors and complaining about the county agent.
His depictions of daily life, from the point of view of an ex-dairy farmer and taciturn husband with a twinkle in his eye, are read by 250,000 people a week—and occasionally woven into Prairie Home Companion scripts. These are stories of courtship; childbirth—he offers the delivery room doctor the use of his calf puller; family; neighbors; chores; and the duties of a father—why is it that a man who spends his days in cow manure can’t change a baby’s diaper? Knee-slappingly funny one moment, poignant the next, it’s a very special look at a distinctly American way of life.
Join me for a FREE presentation series about Minnesota wine at this year’s State Fair!
I will be joining top local wine and food experts for a series of 30 free presentations at this year’s Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 21– Sept. 1. The presentations – which range from State Fair food and wine pairings to a day in the life of local winemakers to exploring Minnesota wineries – will take place every day of the State Fair at Minnesota Wine Country, located at 1271 Underwood St. between Carnes Avenue and Judson Avenue and across the street from the Agriculture/Horticulture Building.
While Minnesota may not be globally known for wine yet, what many Minnesotans don’t realize is that our state’s history with grapes and winemaking spans more than 150 years. Today in Minnesota, there are more than 40 wineries and 600 vineyards across the state producing internationally award-winning wines — thanks in part to four cold-hardy grape varieties developed by (my alma mater) University of Minnesota’s wine grape program.
My presentations are Saturday, Aug. 23 at 5:00 PM and Sunday, Aug. 24 at 3:30 PM.
Here is the description of my two sessions:
Where do you go for some of the world’s best wine and cheese? You may be surprised to learn that more and more people are answering “Minnesota!” We’ll share some of the award-winning tastes from both long-time and up-and-coming wineries and cheesemakers from within our borders. Your new favorite pairing may be just a car ride away.
Stop by Minnesota Wine Country to learn about Minnesota wine and food, sample the best in local wines, try something from the wine-inspired menu and enjoy free music on the patio!
Information and times for all of this year’s speakers is available online at http://mnwine.org/event/mnwinecountry/. You can also follow Minnesota Wine Country on Facebook and Twitter for the most up to date information about Minnesota Wine Country happenings at the State Fair.
We hope to see you there!
