Our story begins in Bernadotte, a tiny Swedish village in southern Minnesota that has been home to the Sjostrom family since 1885 - the middle of nowhere, yet the middle of everywhere. Amid German settlements, it was a small Swedish hamlet where tradition and perseverance thrived.
On July 3, 1885, Charles Sjostrom stepped off a train in New Ulm after 22 days of travel from Kalmar, Sweden. He worked the land, purchased 240 acres, and lost them again - but he never gave up. Taking work with a local farmer, Mr. Webster, Charles eventually married his daughter Julia, waving two families together in the Minnesota soil.
This Bernadotte Bourbon follows in those footsteps. Born in New Ulm at Black Forest Distillery, made from grain grown along the Fort Road, it honors the spirit of Charles and the generations who built their lives here. Descendants of the Sjostroms and Websters, together with neighbors like the Giesekes and Martis, once more began anew in Minnesota.
